PRE-SEA TRAINING FOR GP RATINGS

Duration of this course is six months. The Pre-Sea Course for General Purpose Rating combines Deck and Engineering subjects. After completing training and the approved examination, successful students can seek entry-level employment on merchant vessels.

The syllabus covers seamanship, marine engineering basics, survival, firefighting, first aid, security duties, communication, drill, physical training and shipboard discipline.

Eligibility Criteria

GENERAL PURPOSE RATING COURSE

The six-month course is residential and hostel stay is compulsory. Candidates receive regular practical training, workshop sessions, parade and physical exercise.

Xth standard pass from a government-recognised board with English, Mathematics and Science, with 40% aggregate and 40% in English at Xth/XIIth.

OR

XIIth standard (any stream) from a government-recognised board with 40% aggregate and 40% in English at Xth or XIIth, with English, Mathematics and Science studied at Xth.

OR

Two-year ITI course approved by DVET, with minimum 40% aggregate in the final year and minimum 40% in English at Xth/XIIth.

OR

Minimum 40% in English at 10th standard, 10+2, Diploma or Degree. Minimum 50% in English if passed through vernacular medium.

Between 17 years 6 months and 25 years before entry in training on 1st January or 1st July.

Maximum age: 27 years where permitted by applicable admission rules.

Height: Minimum 158 cm.

BMI: Minimum 20 – Maximum 30.

Normal colour vision.

Distance vision: unaided 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in other eye.

No speech impairment (dysarthria).

6 months.

Course starts on 1st January and 1st July each year, subject to the announced batch schedule.

Passport is compulsory at the time of application, otherwise the application may be rejected.

Educational documents, proof of age, photographs and approved medical fitness certificate are required.

Forms can be downloaded for January batch by the last week of July and for July batch by the last week of January.

Entry Requirements for STCW Courses — Existing Seafarers

  1. Proof of sea service, CDC, Passport or Service Certificate.
  2. INDOS number.
  3. CDC / Passport / Medical Fitness / Certificate of Competency, as applicable.
  4. Recent colour photographs and applicable course fee.

Aspiring Seafarers

  1. Secondary school certificate and proof of age.
  2. Valid identity proof and passport details.
  3. Approved medical fitness certificate.
  4. INDOS-related documents for the selected programme.

Online Issuance of INDOS Facility

The academy supports document preparation for online INDOS registration according to the current Directorate General of Shipping procedure. Candidates must provide genuine, matching identity and educational records.

CDC Application Facility

CDC application assistance is available for eligible candidates after the required modular training and document verification. Final approval is issued only by the competent maritime authority.

To Be Carried by You for Each & Every STCW Course You Attend

  1. Identification in original form: Passport, CDC, INDOS or Driving Licence / Aadhaar / PAN, as applicable.
  2. Course fee receipt.
  3. All documents required for the selected course.
  4. Personal swimming costume where survival training is scheduled.
  5. Medical fitness certificate where required.

Important Rules

  1. Maintain attendance, punctuality and academy discipline.
  2. Wear prescribed uniform and safety equipment during practical sessions.
  3. Use of intoxicants is strictly prohibited.
  4. Carry original certificates for verification when requested.
  5. Certificates are issued only after successful completion and assessment.
  6. Admission is subject to medical fitness, verified documents and seat availability.
  7. Damage to academy property may be charged to the candidate.
  8. Candidates must follow instructor directions during pool, workshop and firefighting exercises.
  9. Mobile phone use may be restricted during training hours.
  10. The academy may revise schedules when required by the approving authority.
